A 29 min. Podcast For Caregivers of Those With Mental Illness

In this podcast, I explore warning signs, suggestions, contact numbers, and books that will help those who support a loved one with a mental health concern

One of my favourite photographs. Once a person is feeling strong and stable, a pet can be such a great source of comfort and recreation.

In this podcast I have researched information from the web, along with discussing my own lived experience and how it relates to the mental health advice I record on this podcast. I want to emphasize a couple of things, first of all, it is estimated that one in ten people with schizophrenia die by suicide, often because they are isolated and don’t receive the help they need (Schizophrenia Society of Alberta). This is a tragedy, and I know there are others who attempt suicide and have very low quality of life, in many ways due to the stigma surrounding mental health. Listen to my podcast and try and educate yourself about mental illness, it is my opinion that this is the last frontier of misunderstood and stigmatized illnesses, where a little care and compassion can do mountains of good.

If you or a loved one have thoughts of suicide, call 988 (please make sure this works in your local area well in advance of having a crisis) and if the person is in danger, call 911 or if feasible, take them to your nearest emergency department.
